British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has indicated that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will not be invited to the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled to take place in Manchester, Politico reports. In an interview with The Economist published on the 5th of November, Burnham was asked whether Putin would be invited to the G20 leaders’ summit planned for Manchester in 2027; he stated clearly that this would not happen. He explained that while the G20 determines the list of invitees, Russia would not be attending an event in Britain due to the serious sanctions currently in place.Burnham’s decision to exclude Putin from the guest list follows a diplomatic spat sparked by US President Donald Trump’s announcement that he intended to invite the Russian leader to a G20 summit in Miami this December.British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband previously told Politico that Britain would maintain its ban on direct engagement with Russia, while noting that decisions made by the US are a matter for American officials. Last week, the group photo session during a G20 foreign ministers’ video call was cancelled because several politicians—including Miliband—refused to be photographed alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Britain has been one of Kyiv’s staunchest supporters—a policy upheld by all five British Prime Ministers who have held office during this period.Burnham also told The Economist that he looks forward to the possibility of hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping for a visit, adding that there is a real opportunity for economic cooperation between the Britain and China.
