Attention! Storm warning level in Riga area upgraded to red

Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre has upgraded the storm warning in Riga, Jūrmala and Pierīga from orange to red level.
Meteorologists predict between 12:00 and 15:00 north-western winds in Riga will reach 33 m/sec.
Red level warning means there is risk of major damages to local infrastructures, as well as accidents that may put people’s lives in danger.
Residents are urged to follow information and recommendations provided by institutions. Residents should also be prepared for emergency measures, evacuation included.
The wind will pull down trees and cause other damages. People could be injured from items carried by the strong wind and fragments of debris. Damages to both infrastructure and private property are likely.
The water level in the capital city, similarly to Friday, will increase by about one metre above the norm. In Riga, downstream Gauja and Lielupe rivers the warning level remains yellow due to high water levels and flooding of nearby areas.
On Monday, 17 January, north-west wind speed in Latvia was the strongest at Liepaja and Ventspils sea port – 27 m/sec, according to meteorological observations.
Wind speed was the third strongest was 22 m/sec in Daugavgriva. In the centre of Riga, Pāvilosta and Rucava wind speed reached 21 m/sec.
In morning hours southern parts of Finland experienced wind speed of 29-34 m/sec (up to 39 m/sec at some meteorological stations).
Wind speed at Estonian isles reached 30-32 m/sec in some areas.

The peak of the storm is expected in the mid-day and the afternoon. In Latgale the storm is expected to calm around the evening.
Wind speed will start reducing in Kurzeme and Vidzeme around the evening.
The biggest damages from the storm are expected in Riga, Jurmala and regions surrounding the capital city.
