Coalition partners have agreed to continue working in the government, Prime Minister Evika Siliņa announced after a meeting with representatives of the political parties forming the coalition.
On Thursday, Siliņa had invited representatives from New Unity, Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS), and The Progressives for talks.
The LETA news agency had previously reported that disagreements among the parties represented in Siliņa’s government had escalated to such an extent that on Wednesday she did not rule out the possibility of the government collapsing. Officially, this would have been due to the inability of New Unity, The Progressives, and ZZS to agree on support for the airline airBaltic.
Siliņa had stated that she was prepared for the coalition to fall apart in order to secure ZZS support
in the Saeima for granting a short-term loan to airBaltic. She had previously revealed that ZZS had offered to support the loan in a parliamentary vote on Tuesday if Transport Minister Atis Švinka stepped down.
“If the price for ensuring support for airBaltic is the collapse of the coalition – I am ready for it,” Siliņa had said earlier, emphasizing that support for the airline was more important to her than maintaining the government coalition.
