Estonia adopts additional budget for defence, energy and refugee needs

In Tallinn, the Riigikogu has adopted Estonia’s supplementary state budget of 878 million euros. The legislators also expressed their continued confidence in the government of the Reform Party and the Centre Party, Estonian public broadcaster ERR reports.
The legislation in addition to Estonia’s 2022 state budget was drafted in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and passed in the Riigikogu in the small hours of Thursday morning. The vote also being about the parliament’s confidence in the ruling coalition was 54 to 29.

The purposes of the 878 million euros will be defence and security, energy security and hosting refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine. The number of Ukrainian war refugees in Estonia has surpassed 38 500 and Estonia has been one of the largest defence aid contributors to Ukraine per capita.
