Four telecoms’ firms have applied to take part in Estonia’s auction of the frequency licences for fifth-generation mobile communications (5G), Estonian public broadcaster ERR reports.
Three frequency licenses in the 3,410-3,800 MHz range are available for the starting price of EUR 1,597,000. The interested companies are Estonian mobile telecommunication operators Telia Eesti AS, Elisa Eesti AS, Tele2 Eesti AS and Lithuania-based Bite Lietuva, according to the Consumer Protection and Technical Regulatory Authority.

«I am glad the competition has attracted four participants, including a newcomer. This demonstrates that telecoms take a keen interest in developing the Estonian market and gives us confidence that 5G services will hit the market as soon as possible,» Estonian Minister of Entrepreneurship and IT Andres Sutt commented in a press release.
Next, the Estonian Consumer Protection and Technical Regulatory Authority will evaluate the bidders and bids for conformity this week and invite those, who qualify, to the first auction. The start of the first frequency license auction will be set in one week and the institution expects to issue the frequency licenses in June of this year after which telecoms can start building their 5G infrastructure.
