As Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack against Ukraine, Poland scrambled military aircraft overnight into Thursday and placed its ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems on heightened alert, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said.
“Due to the activity of Russian long-range aviation carrying out strikes on Ukrainian territory, military aviation operations have begun in Polish airspace,” the command said in a statement on X.
Ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems were also placed on heightened alert.
Polish authorities said the measures were preventive and aimed at ensuring the security and protection of Polish airspace, particularly in areas bordering regions under threat.
As previously reported, at least six people were killed and dozens injured in Russian missile attacks on the city of Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight into Thursday.
During a massive Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine overnight into July 30, a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile entered Polish airspace and crashed near Lublin.
