On the evening of the 4th of November, Brussels airports were temporarily closed and incoming flights were diverted to other airports, according to Politico.
The Belgian air traffic control agency told local media that the drones were spotted shortly before 8 p.m. on the 4th of November, prompting the suspension of all incoming and outgoing flights. The news agency Reuters reports that traffic was restored after about two hours, but the airspace was closed again a little later. The national airline reported that 15 outgoing flights were canceled during this time, and eight incoming planes were diverted to other airports.
This is another case in Europe where drone sightings have forced airports to close.
On the 31st of October, flights were also diverted at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport when drones were reported there.
While this is the first report of drones over Brussels Airport, suspicious drones were spotted over several Belgian military bases earlier this month. Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken said the drones seen there were likely used for espionage, to obtain information about fighter jets and ammunition depots. An investigation into drones near military bases is ongoing.
