VIDEO | What to do in case of a terrorist attack? Latvia’s Security Service provides practical instructions

The State Security Service (VDD) has released a video to raise public awareness on how to act during a terrorist attack. Authorities stress that the publication is not linked to any increase in terrorism threats — the threat level in Latvia remains low, and no immediate changes are expected.

Given recent attacks in Europe, VDD highlights the importance of knowing basic safety principles. People are advised to pay attention to suspicious persons, bags, or packages, and never approach or touch suspicious objects. If such an item is noticed, one should move away immediately and alert security staff.

In the event of a threat, VDD urges citizens to leave their belongings behind, prioritize their own safety, and promptly call the emergency number 112.

Key principles include moving away from danger, following security or staff instructions,

and helping others if possible.

If escape is not possible, individuals should hide, switch off lights, silence phones and other devices, and wait until they can safely contact emergency services. Citizens are warned not to confront attackers — this is the responsibility of trained units.

Upon police arrival, people are advised to keep hands visible, avoid sudden movements, provide requested information, and follow further instructions.

The video was produced in cooperation with the State Police Counterterrorism Unit “Omega” and Latvian Television, with co-financing from the European Union.
