Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has summoned a US embassy official for talks over concerns that US citizens are conducting influence operations in Denmark-owned Greenland, Reuters reports.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that the US wants to take over the strategically located, mineral-rich Arctic island, citing national and international security concerns. Trump has also not ruled out the use of force to take control of the island.
According to a report by Danish public broadcaster DR, the government believes that
at least three US citizens linked to Trump are operating in Greenland and conducting influence operations.
The broadcaster did not name the individuals.
The foreign minister said that any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the Danish kingdom is completely unacceptable. “In this light, I have asked the Foreign Ministry to summon an American diplomat for talks,” the minister said.
The US embassy in Copenhagen is currently headed by Ambassador Mark Stroh. Reuters could not immediately reach the US embassy for comment on the situation. The Danish Foreign Ministry also did not respond to a request for further details.
