Latvian generals refrain from commenting claims about running for NBS commander’s post

Latvian brigade generals – National Guard Commander Kaspars Pudāns and Chief of Joint Chiefs of Staff Georga Kerlins – refrain from commenting on information reported by various media channels regarding their alleged running for the post of Commander of Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS).

NBS told LETA that neither of the two high-ranking officer wants to comment on this information because President Edgars Rinkēvičs has yet to nominate any candidate. The two officers also refrain from commenting on whether or not they have agreed to run for the post at all.

In accordance with the procedure, Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds has handed the president a total of four potential candidates. Only two are left after the initial evaluation procedure. LTV programme De Facto reported on Sunday that Pudāns and Kerlins are the two potential candidates.

Heads of Saeima committees who are also members of the National Security Committee are confident about both candidates.

The president promises to name a candidate for the Saeima to vote after the holiday – in the second half of November.

The term of NBS Commander Leonīds Kalniņš ends in January 2025.
