The special flights scandal involving ex-PM Krišjānis Kariņš had a strong destabilising effect. This is why our main objective is to focus on the government’s work, said Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa in an interview to TV3.
“These discussions do not contribute to the economic development course,” Siliņa said about the special flights topic, adding that her main objectives now are focused on “leading the government and focusing on immediate tasks”.
When asked about New Unity’s position in the special flights case, the PM said Kariņš has already stepped down and has taken political responsibility. The party approved of this decision – this is the party’s position.
Siliņa stressed multiple times that after the special flights scandal, it is important to improve regulations that govern the organisation of missions, so that it is completely clear what should be done in various situations.
Money is extremely important, but the time aspect is just as important, the politician said about the organisation of missions.
When asked why New Unity looked for a new Minister of Foreign Affairs outside the party’s ranks, Siliņa said there are still capable people among the party’s members. She mentioned Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, Sandra Kalniete and Irma Kalniņa as examples. However, these people work in other directions.
Siliņa believes Latvian diplomat Baiba Braže will contribute a great deal to the country’s foreign policy.
