The 30 years of relative peace are over, said Director of NATO’s Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence Jānis Sārts in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma.
He stressed that the world is becoming unsafe and unstable due to various processes. He also said that Russia’s ability to reform into a military economy means the country can continue the war.
At the same time, however, NATO is now holding the biggest military exercises of the last decade and preparing for the worst case scenarios. “We have to understand that 30 years of relative peace are over. We’re unlikely to see this kind of state for some time,” said the Latvian expert.
He said that the most believable and expected form of attack Russia can perform is a hybrid attack.
Different kinds of acts of sabotage appear in the region more and more. These acts are more often than not committed by local residents supporting Russia. The country remains a threat to its neighbours because its military capabilities are still intact.
The director of NATO StratCom said the reinforcement of Latvia’s border indicates a rational approach. “The best we can do is prepare, because if we are well-prepared, the possibility of Russia deciding to do something goes down,” he said in his interview.
