Russian investigators have not yet established the cause of Alexei Navalny’s death, and it is unclear how long it will take to reach an official conclusion, Navalny’s mother told a spokeswoman on Monday, the 19th of February, reports Reuters.
Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila, was told at the prison colony on Saturday that Navalny had died of “sudden death syndrome”, which, according to Navalny’s representatives, includes various heart disorders that lead to death.
His spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh said that Navalny’s 69-year-old mother and lawyers had been informed of
an extended official examination into the cause of death,
the duration of which is unclear. “The cause of death is “undetermined”,” Reuters cites Yarmysh, she added that the Russian authorities are lying and stalling.
According to Yarmysh, Navalny’s mother and lawyers were also not allowed to visit him at the morgue. She said that the staff had not given an answer to the question whether Alexei’s body was there at all.
Since the death of Aleksei Navalny,
President Vladimir Putin’s toughest opponent, more than 400 people have been detained at memorials in 32 Russian cities, according to OVD-Info, an association that monitors freedom of assembly in Russia.
The association reported that most arrests took place in St Petersburg and Moscow, which have been the biggest strongholds of Navalny supporters. On Saturday evening alone, more than 200 people had been detained.

OVD-Info also reported isolated arrests in smaller towns across Russia.
The online news portal SOTA reported that in Luhansk, Russian-controlled territory of Ukraine, residents put flowers in honour of Navalny at a monument to the victims of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.
In another city, flowers were also put at a monument to the heroes of the Russian Revolution of the early 20th century.
Despite attempts by the authorities to remove the flowers, people in St Petersburg immediately put flowers down again.
