Last year 27 175 people died in Latvia. The number of births, on the other hand, went down to 14 326, as reported by the Ministry of Justice.
The number of deaths did go down in Latvia slightly in 2023. In 2022 a total of 30 12 people died in Latvia, and 15 921 were born.
Information from the Ministry of Justice indicates that the number of marriages signed last year went down as well, to 10 662 from 12 113 in 2022.
The ministry’s Department of Civil Registers recorded nationality change for 94 people in 2023, which is slightly less when compared to the year prior (125 in 2022). The number of name and surname changes went up slightly in 2023 – 2 067 decisions (237 for name change and 1 721 for surname change, 109 for name and surname change) in total as opposed to 1 977 in 2022.
The most often reasons for name change were difficulties with integration in society, recovery of birth or pre-marriage name, etc.
Cases when people decide to accept their spouse’s surname are counted separately. According to information from the ministry, there were at least 2 700 such cases in 2023. At the same time, some married people decide to change their names immediately after marriage, others – much later.
