Over the course of the past several years road transport intensity between Latvia and Kazakhstan has increased. The overall situation in the railway sector looks positive as well – freight transports there had increased four times in 2022 when compared to the year prior. Latvia and Kazakhstan are both interested in deepening and expanding cooperation in the road and rail sector, BNN was told by the Ministry of Transport.
Between 2nd and 6th of October Latvian Ministry of Transport’s deputy state secretary Uldis Reimanis is away on an official visit to Kazakhstan together with an entire delegation of industry companies, participating in the ongoing transport and logistics exhibition and business forum. There the delegation hopes to reach out and discuss with local service providers perspectives for the development of a multi-modal transport network.
The ministry reports that on 4th-6th of October Kazakhstan’s capital city of Astana is hosting an international transport-logistics exhibition TransLogistica Kazahstan 2023. Latvia is represented by representatives of more than 50 transport and logistics companies, including Riga Freeport, Ventspils Freeport, Liepaja SEZ, Latvian Railway, Latvian Stevedoring Company Association, Riga International Airport and representatives of other transport companies.
During this exhibition Reimanis and other representatives met with existing and potential partners to discuss existing cooperation and create new logistical routes.

The Ministry of Transport notes that a dialogue has taken place about cooperation in the field of aviation in order to sign an agreement between Latvia and Kazakhstan on air traffic in the near future. This agreement will ensure wider opportunities for mutual transport logistics.
In addition to the exhibition Astana also hosts New Silk Way business forum, which features multiple panel discussions to discuss the role of Kazakhstan and Central Asia in the development of the international transport corridor in the current geopolitical situation.
The ministry notes that on the 5th of October Reimanis met with Kazakhstan’s Minister of Transport Marat Karabayev. The two discussed cooperation in the fields of road, rail and aviation transport logistics. The two sides also discussed opportunities to improve freight-carrying operations between the two countries using Latvia’s sea ports.
During this meeting Reimanis as the co-chairman of the Latvian-Kazakhstan Transport work group’s informed Karabayev about this December’s planned Latvian-Kazakh inter-governmental committee and invited the minister to visit Latvia to have a look at Latvia’s offered opportunities in the transport and logistics sector in person.
