Latvian company punished for attempt to breach sanctions

Since August 2023 Latvian prosecution office has presented fines to two businesses in criminal cases regarding the breach of international sanctions imposed on Belarus or attempts to do this.
One of the co-owners of Latvijas propāna gāze company Anatolijs Černihs was fined EUR 12 400 for an attempt to breach international sanctions in May 2022. The prosecution office also imposed coercive measures on Latvijas propāna gāze itself –

the company’s rights have been limited

for one year in regards to dealings with Belarus and Belarusian businesses.
The company was fined EUR 24 800 and also applied with confiscation of property worth EUR 9 500. The prosecution office also declared EUR 64 008 kept on the company’s bank account as illegally acquired property and decided to confiscate it as well.
The case was investigated by the State Security Service (VDD). According to the statement presented on the press, the criminal process was launched on the 28th of September 2022 and the investigation was related to transactions involving iron and steel products.
Information from Firmas.lv shows that owners of Latvijas propāna gāze include the company itself (49%); AC gāze LLC (20.5%), whose sole owner is Anatolijs Černihs; Fly Gas LLC (20.5%), whose sole owner is Aleksandrs Siņegubovs and directly Černihs (5%) and Siņegubovs (5%). The company’s turnover in 2022 was EUR 101.4 million and profits – EUR 3 million.
In another case the prosecution office fined another businessman EUR 7 440 for breaching sanctions imposed by the European Union. The company involved was applied with coercive measures – ban on imports of goods from Belarus for a period of two years.
