Latvian Minister of Climate and Energy to address electricity tariff problem first

Latvia’s new Minister of Climate and Energy Kaspars Melnis says the reduction of electricity distribution tariffs is one of his primary tasks.
On Monday, the 18th of September, Melnis told TV3 programme 900 seconds that reduction of electricity tariffs, preparation for the new heating season, as well as studying Latvia’s progress in climate goals are among his chief tasks.

“Tariffs are first – we need rapid and fast decisions. The second – we can see the heating season is coming. There are many issues to resolve there,” said Melnis,

adding that primary tasks also include climate goals Latvia needs to achieve – where the country is, what development there is and whether Latvia is able to achieve established goals.
Melnis also mentioned that on Monday, the 18th of September, the coalition plans to discuss the topic of electricity distribution tariffs. “Today we will meet in the Coalition Parties Council. We will discuss this topic,” said the minister, adding that a solution will be sought to help reduce the tariff growth for households as quickly as possible.
When asked how far the tariff reduction should go, the minister said the situation still needs more in-depth evaluation.

“I don’t want to speculate. […] This is a decision to be made by specialists,” said Melnis.

On the 15th of September the Saeima approved the new Cabinet of Ministers under Prime Minister Evika Siliņa. The new Latvian government consists of New Unity, Progressive Party and Union of Greens and Farmers.
