In Ukraine, a 22-day-old child among seven people killed in Russian shelling

A 22-day-old child, her 12-year-old brother and their parents were among seven people killed in Russian attacks in southern Ukraine on Sunday, August 13, writes BCC.
According to Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko, the bombs hit a family home in the village of Shyroka Balka in Kherson region. Among the dead were another resident of the village and two men from the neighbouring town of Stanislav.

“Terrorists must be stopped. They must be stopped by force,” Klymenko said. “They don’t understand anything else.”

The minister shared photographs of the aftermath of the attack on Shyroka Balka, showing black smoke billowing from buildings and the bodies of the dead digitally obscured. Thirteen other people were injured in the attack, he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an address to the nation, condemned the “brutal” attack in Shyroka Balka. “Five people died,” he said, “among them only a 22-day-old girl. Her brother, only 12 years old and only 39-year-old mother, Olesia, also died.” He added that there were 17 reports of Russian shelling in Kherson and many more from neighbouring towns.

“There is no day when Russian evil does not receive our entirely just response,” he said, “We will not leave any of Russia’s crimes unanswered”

Kherson was one of four regions of Ukraine that Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed last year. In November, Ukrainian forces recaptured the western part of the region. Russian troops continue to shell the area.
