French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to take his “one-man diplomacy” strategy to a new level and become the first Western leader to participate in the BRICS summit, writes Politico.
Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna informed about the French President’s commitment on Tuesday, the 20th of June. After a meeting with South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor, Colonna said: “Having a dialogue is always positive, even when we don’t 100 percent agree on everything.”
In August, the summit of the BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa – will take place in South Africa. These countries continue to support Moscow despite Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
If Macron receives an invitation to the summit, he will be the first Western leader to attend.
South Africa’s foreign minister indicated that an invitation to the summit has not been ruled out, but the final decision depends on South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The issue of participation in the summit will be discussed by Macron with Ramaphosa when the two meet in Paris.
