If the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) decides to support New Unity’s (JV) presidential candidate [Latvia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs] Edgars Rinkēvičs, the party’s chances of entering the government could go up. Such a possibility is not entirely excluded in the political backstage.
On the other hand, this possibility is doubted by many other officials. For example, JV representatives recommend ignoring various conspiracy theories spread around in the context of the upcoming presidential elections.
It is unknown how ZZS plans to act in the vote.
ZZS faction has agreed to make their decision which candidate to support on Election Day.
On the 17th of May ZZS will meet with Uldis Pīlēns, who is the presidential candidate from the Combined List (AS) political party. Next week the party will meet with Progressive Party’s presidential candidate Elina Pinto.
JV Saeima faction leader Ainars Latkovskis told the media he cannot comment on what Minister of Agriculture Didžis Šmits told Diena newspaper – about JV looking for support from ZZS partner and leader of For Latvia and Ventspils political party Aivars Lembergs.
At the same time, he said that as presidential elections draw closer, many minds are overtaken by “the most unbelievable conspiracy theories and suspicions about everyone and everything”.
Lembergs, meanwhile, denies having delegated anyone for negotiations with JV about Rinkēvičs candidacy.
Šmits, on the other hand, claimed in his interview to Diena that before Rinkēvičs was selected a candidate, JV politicians had met with Lembergs’ representatives and had received guarantees on support for Rinkēvičs. At least one such meeting took place in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
So far coalition parties have not been able to agree on a single presidential candidate.
