Although the National Alliance has yet to voice support to any of the three officially announced presidential candidates, the political party does not plan to present any of its own candidates, the party’s public relations specialist Laima Melkina told BNN.
When asked when the National Alliance could support any of the officially proposed candidates for the upcoming presidential elections in Latvia, Melkina said the party plans to announce it before the 31st of May.
Previously the National Alliance selected President Egils Levits as their presidential candidate. An absolute majority of the party voted in his favour.
Until just recently Levits’ only other competitor in presidential elections was businessman and founder of the Combined List political party Uldis Pīlēns.
The latter was officially proposed as a presidential candidate on the 10th of May. That same day Levits, who agreed to run for presidency again, announced his decision to withdraw from the race. He explained that one of the reason s for his decision is that the ruling coalition is divided on the topic of the upcoming elections.
New Unity did initially support Levits as a presidential candidate. On the 11th of May New Unity officially announced Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs will be the party’s presidential candidate.
The Progressive party, which is in opposition, has picked “public management expert” Elīna Pinto as their presidential candidate.
Presidential elections in Latvia will be taking place in the Saeima on the 31st of May.
