The Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) Saeima faction has plans to pick its own candidate for the post of state president, said the faction’s chairman Uldis Augulis in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma on Tuesday, the 7th of February.
This means ZZS will not support President Egils Levits for re-election. «We did not support him in previous elections either. Currently we are in the middle of discussions about our presidential candidate. We will likely pick our own,» said Augulis.
«Our opinion of this will have been formulated by May.»
The politician did not say how many candidates are on the table right now.
Latvia’s PM Krišjānis Kariņš previously said he would support President Egils Levits for re-election.
«We’ve had a very good relationship with Mr. Levits. I would support his re-election. I haven’t spoken with my colleagues in the party yet, but I haven’t heard any negative opinions about this yet,» said the PM when asked by TV3 programme 900 seconds about supporting Levits for re-election.
Egils Levits was elected as President of Latvia in 2019.
