Zelensky speaks to Congress and Biden in Washington about military aid

US President Joe Biden delivered a strong message to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, the 21st of September, assuring him that US support for Ukraine’s efforts to fight the Russian invasion will continue, even though some Republican lawmakers oppose sending billions in additional aid to Ukraine, reports Reuters.
After two hours of talks, Biden shook Zelensky’s hand and said: “[..] we are with you, we are staying with you.” Zelensky expressed his gratitude for the recent 325 million US dollars in weapon and air defences military aid, stressing that

“this is exactly what the Ukrainian soldiers need.”

After his speech at the UN, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a diplomatic trip to Washington. He was due to meet military leaders at the Pentagon, visit the US Capitol and give a speech at the National Archives Museum.
During a meeting in the Oval Office, President Joe Biden announced 325 million US dollar new military aid to Ukraine, commending the courage of the Ukrainian people. Biden expressed the commitment of the American people and their allies to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia, both in its defence efforts and in its post-conflict reconstruction, stressing the importance of reform in the fight against corruption in Ukraine.
Zelensky expressed his deep appreciation for US assistance in the fight against “Russian terror”, with a particular focus on air defence needs. He underlined the purpose of his visit to Washington – to strengthen Ukraine’s ability to

“defend its citizens, families, homes and global democracy”.

In a closed-door discussion with Senators, Zelensky stressed the crucial role of military assistance in Ukraine’s war effort. After the hearing, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer quoted him as saying: “If we don’t get aid, we will lose the war.” Later, Zelensky characterized his discussions with lawmakers as candid and productive.
Despite the continued support of President Biden and most congressional leaders for aid to Ukraine, President Zelensky found a less receptive audience than when he visited Washington nine months ago.
