Year-end with a wintry character: snow, wind, and frost

On Monday and Tuesday, the sky will be mostly overcast, clearing only in places. In many areas, clouds will intermittently bring precipitation—mainly sleet and snow, and in places where the air is warmer, also rain, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Roads will be slippery in places! During these days, a light to moderate wind will blow, moderate to moderately strong along the coast, from the northwest and west, turning to the northwest and north by Tuesday.

The wind will continue to be gusty, mainly in western and central regions, reaching 15–19 m/s, while along the coast gusts will strengthen to 20–24 m/s. On the night into Monday, temperatures will drop to -1…+4°C, and in the east to -1…-6°C. By Tuesday night, air temperatures will fall to -2…-6°C across almost the entire country, with milder conditions only along the coast at +1…-2°C. On Monday morning, air temperatures will reach 0…+5°C, but during the day the air will gradually cool, and on Tuesday will not exceed +1…-4°C, reports the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

On the last day of the year, the sky will remain cloudy, although sunshine will appear in places.

During the night, snow is expected in many areas, while during the day only in some places. The northwest and north wind will continue to blow at a moderate to moderately strong pace during the night, with gusts reaching 15–19 m/s in central and coastal regions, up to 21 m/s along the seashore, but it will ease across the country during the day. Both at night and during the day, air temperatures will range from -3…-8°C, while along the Kurzeme coast they will be between -1…-3°C.

On the night into January 1, precipitation intensity will decrease, with light snow expected only in some places. However, in the first days of the new year, the sky will remain overcast, and new precipitation zones will move across Latvia, bringing snow and sleet to most of the country, while along the coast—where the air will be warmer—rain is also expected. During these days, the wind will strengthen and become gusty in places. Although on the first day of the year temperatures will be wintry cold, with air cooling to as low as -10°C in eastern regions, temperatures are expected to rise slightly toward the end of the week.
