Woman killed in axe attack at Warsaw University

Police said on Wednesday, the 7th of May, that they had arrested a 22-year-old Polish man after he killed one person with an axe at Warsaw University in an attack that the university described as a “huge tragedy”, according to Reuters.
“Police have detained a man who entered the University of Warsaw campus. One person was killed and another was taken to hospital with injuries,” Warsaw police said in a statement on X.
They said the incident took place at around 18.40 local time when the man attacked people on the campus with an axe, adding that the detainee is a 22-year-old Polish citizen.
Gazeta Wyborcza reported that the attacker was a third-year law student.
The private broadcaster Polsat News reported that a woman’s severed head and an axe were found at the university.
A spokesman for the district prosecutor’s office refused to comment on whether or not a severed head had been found.
The spokesman said that a female university administrator was killed at the scene and a security guard was injured and taken to hospital in critical condition.
He said the attacker had entered the university auditorium.
The rector of the University of Warsaw said in a statement that the 8h of May would be a day of mourning at the university and called the attack a “huge tragedy”.
“We express our deep sorrow and condolences to the family and friends,” the statement said.
