Woman detained in Latvia for allegedly transferring funds to the Russian army

The State Security Service (VDD) has detained a woman on suspicion of responding to a call to provide financial resources to the Russian army in its war against Ukraine.

The leader of the Latvian Russian Union (LKS) and Jelgava City Council member Andrejs Pagors (elected from the Suverēnā vara, Apvienība jaunlatvieši list) stated on social media that the detained person is Rēzekne-based activist Polina Kamļeva.

Pagors said that Kamļeva is an LKS member and his associate. He also expressed concern about what is happening in Latvia, claiming it resembles a “witch hunt.”

The VDD confirmed to LETA that on the 25th of November it launched criminal proceedings against this individual on suspicion of financing an armed conflict taking place outside Latvia.

According to information available to the VDD,

the woman responded to a request from a contact person in Russia to provide financial resources

to the Russian armed forces for the purchase of radio-electronic equipment. It was also established that the money had been transferred to individuals in Russia.

The woman was detained on the 2nd of December and is currently being held in custody as a security measure.

On the same day, the VDD conducted procedural operations at two locations connected to the individual in Rēzekne and in Preiļi Municipality. A detailed examination of the data carriers seized during the searches is now underway.
