The weather will be calm on Tuesday, the 19th of November. The weather conditions will be determined by a passing cyclone, so the sky will be mostly cloudy, and it will rain occasionally, mainly in the eastern districts of the country, with wet snow and sleet in places, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
Slight to moderate south-westerly, westerly winds are expected. Temperatures will drop to 0…+5 degrees at night, but during the day it will warm up to +2…+7 degrees. A new active cyclone will approach the country from the south-west in the evening hours, bringing a wet and windy start to the working week.
A wide area of precipitation will reach Latvia from the south overnight on Wednesday, bringing persistent snow and sleet across the country, gradually turning to rain.
According to the Latvian Centre for Environment, Geology and Meteorology, snow will cover most of the country, in some places even 5-9 cm thick! A warning of the appropriate level will be issued in the first half of the day on Tuesday. The cyclone will continue to determine the country’s weather conditions on Thursday, but precipitation will be less intense. Note that snow cover will decrease during this period as temperatures will remain warm in many parts of the country. Rain will also accelerate the melting process, eventually replacing snow.
All participants of the traffic are urged to take extra care in such weather conditions – roads will be slippery, and visibility will be significantly impaired in snow!
The cyclone will bring storm-force winds along with precipitation to parts of the area. On Wednesday, a slow to moderate easterly-southeasterly wind will still blow at the beginning of the day, but from the morning onwards it will start to pick up and gradually come from the south and south-east, gusting up to 15-19 m/s, and already exceeding 20 m/s along the coast. On Thursday, the wind will turn from the south-west and west, but remain gusty throughout the country, with the strongest gusts still expected near the coast.
On both Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures will be in the range of 0…+6 degrees.
The cyclone’s influence will diminish slightly on Friday and over the weekend. Although precipitation (mainly snow and sleet) is expected to continue sporadically over most of the country, its intensity will decrease significantly. Winds will be gusty on some days as atmospheric pressure changes more rapidly. A colder air mass will flow into Latvia, causing the weather to turn colder – in many parts of the country, temperatures will drop back below zero during the dark hours of the day, i.e. the air will cool to 0…-5 degrees, while on days it will be no colder than -2…+3 degrees.
Current forecasts indicate that an active cyclone will approach our territory again on Sunday, bringing with it not only a new area of precipitation, but also gusty winds, the Latvian Centre for Environment, Geology and Meteorology points out.
