Winter in Latvia intensifies: snow and frost down to –20°C

On Tuesday, skies will be mostly cloudy. Snow is expected in some areas overnight and in the morning, while by evening snowfall will spread across many eastern and central regions. On Wednesday, snowfall will intensify, and in eastern Latvia the snow cover is expected to increase by 2–4 cm, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

A light to moderate southeasterly to easterly wind will blow, easing significantly overnight into Wednesday. Night-time air temperatures will drop to between –4 and –9°C, although on Tuesday it will be slightly warmer along the Kurzeme coast, where temperatures will range from –2 to –3°C. During the day, temperatures will rise to between 0 and –5°C.

On Thursday, skies will clear in some areas during the night, with snow expected only in the early nighttime hours.

A light wind will continue overnight, but during the day it will strengthen from the east and northeast. Night-time temperatures will fall to –5 to –10°C, and in places where skies clear, even down to –12°C. Daytime temperatures will remain similar, between –5 and –10°C, while along the Gulf of Riga coast in Kurzeme it will be milder, at –2 to –4°C.

Toward the end of the week, the influence of a high-pressure system will strengthen, bringing less precipitation and clearer skies on some days. Compared to the first half of the week, air temperatures will drop by several more degrees and at times approach –20°C.
