Weekend: slippery roads and intensive precipitation in Latvia

The night to Saturday will be overcast. Rain and wet snow are expected in western parts of Latvia. Snow and wet snow are expected in eastern parts of the country – snow layer may reach 2-4 cm. Precipitation is expected to be the most intense in Vidzeme. Wind speed will go up as well and will blow from the south-west and west, reaching a speed of 15-18 m/sec, as reported by Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Motorists and pedestrians alike should be careful, as roads and walkways will be slippery. Air temperature will drop to 0° C… -5° C, slightly warmer in Kurzeme and western parts of Vidzeme.

On Sunday, the 15th of December, the sky will clear up for a short while, but only locally. Precipitation will come as well – mainly wet snow and snow. The layer of snow in eastern parts of the country will increased by 5 cm. Meteorologists say the wind will remain strong along the coast, blowing from the south and south-west. On the night to Sunday, air temperature will drop to -3° C… +3° C. Daytime air temperature will reach 0° C… +3° C.

Meteorologists predict next week weather conditions will remain similar to this weekend. Multiple cyclones will pass through the country throughout the week. Precipitation and strong wind will come as well. Warmer masses of air will gradually come to the region, making rain and wet snow the predominant types of precipitation. Air temperature at night will drop to -2° C… +3° C (+4° C… +6° C along the coast), whereas daytime air temperature may reach +8° C.
