Weekend frost in Latvia to reach –25°C, sharp weather changes expected next week

On Friday, mostly cloudy weather is expected across Latvia, but without precipitation. A light to moderate easterly wind will blow, with gusts reaching up to 14 m/s in parts of Kurzeme at the beginning of the night, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

At night, air temperatures will drop to between –4°C and –9°C, and in the northeastern parts of the country even down to –11°C. The highest air temperatures, ranging from –4°C to –9°C, will be observed during the first half of the day, while in the afternoon temperatures will decrease by a couple of degrees.

The weekend will pass without precipitation, with variable cloud cover and occasional clear skies. A light to moderate easterly wind will continue. On Saturday, air temperatures both at night and during the day are expected to range between –11°C and –16°C,

while coastal areas will be slightly warmer, at –6°C to –10°C.

On the night into Sunday, temperatures will plunge to –20°C to –25°C, and to –12°C to –17°C along the Kurzeme coast. During the day on Sunday, the air will warm up to –12°C to –17°C, and to –9°C to –13°C along the coast.

At the beginning of next week, precipitation is expected, including snow and sleet, with gusty winds forecast along the Kurzeme coast. Night-time temperatures will rise to around –11°C, while during the day air temperatures in some areas will approach 0°C.
