Weather to remain windy and rich in precipitation in Latvia

This week, weather conditions in Latvia will be dictated by multiple cyclones – several precipitation zones will pass through the country. The wind will remain strong. Yellow level warning will remain in place along the coast because of strong wind! Warmer masses of air will flow to the country, causing air temperature will remain positive. No new layer of snow will form. Even the snow in eastern territories will melt, as reported by Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

The sky will be mostly cloudy in the coming days. Nevertheless, the sky will become clear at times on Friday. Wide precipitation zones will pass through the country from the west. On the night to Thursday, the 19th of December, these precipitation zones will carry lasting precipitation – mostly rain. Eastern territories will see snow and wet snow. It will rain during the day as well.

Some rain will also come on Friday. In some areas, rain will transition into wet snow.

Road traffic participants are urged to be cautious, as certain roads will be slippery. Fog will appear in certain eastern regions, impacting visibility. The wind will blow from the south and south-west. Wind speed will reach 15-19 m/sec (up to 20 m/sec along the coast). On Friday night the wind will gradually draw in from the west and north-west and will remain strong. On Thursday night air temperature will drop to +1° C… +6° C (0° C… -2° C in eastern territories). Nevertheless, air temperature will gradually go up over the course of the night. Daytime air temperature will reach +4° C… +8° C.

Weather will remain windy and rich with precipitation on the weekend. Precipitation will consist mostly of rain, as well as snow and wet snow in eastern territories. Roads will remain slippery! The wind will bow from the west and south-west on Saturday. Wind speed may reach 15-19 m/sec. Air temperature will drop to 0° C… -3° C at night. During the day, air temperature will stay at +1° C… +6° C.

The intensity of precipitation will go down at the beginning of next week. The wind will calm down as well. Air temperature will still remain above 0° C. This means Christmas in most of the country will not be white this year.
