Weather in Latvia expected to be volatile this week

Colder masses of air will flow to Latvia in the coming days – at times at night air temperature will drop to -20° C. In the second half of the week daytime air temperature will increase. In some areas air temperature will increase to +4° C… +7° C. Wind will become stronger as well, according to Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
On Monday, 10 January, weather in Latvia will be dictated by the southern portion of an anticyclone. Weather in most of the country will be cloudy. Some areas will experience snowfall. The sky in some areas will clear up, letting the sun shine. Wind speed will remain slow and will blow from the north. Daytime air temperature will stay at +1° C… +3° C.
Anticyclone activity will increase on Tuesday, which means precipitation will calm down and wind speed will be slow. At the start the night will be cloudy, but the second half of the night will be clear, which means air temperature will drop rapidly: as far as -9° C… -14° C in most of the country, -16° C… -18° C in Vidzeme and -4° C… -8° C in Kurzeme.
Daytime air temperature will remain similar: -4° C… -8° C in western parts of Latvia and -8° C… -13° C in eastern parts.
On Wednesday anticyclone influence will gradually reduce and daytime weather will be dictated by a southern portion of a cyclone. In the first half of the week weather will be clear and wind speed will be slow. This means air temperature will be -10° C… -15° C (-6° C… -11° C along the coast). In Vidzeme air temperature may drop as far as -20° C.
From the second half of the night, wind speed will gradually increase and blow from the south and air temperature will start increasing gradually. The sky will be covered in a thick layer of clouds. Air temperature will start increasing – daytime air temperature will be above 0° C, but it will remain negative in eastern parts of Latvia (0° C… -4° C). Some precipitation is expected in many parts of Latvia during the day – mainly snow. Kurzeme may experience wet snow and rain.
In the second half of the week the wind will blow from the west, north-west. From the night to Friday onward wind speed will start increasing, reaching 15-18 m/sec (20-21 m/sec along the coast).
Air temperature during the day and at night will remain positive, reaching upwards of +4° C… +7° C in western areas.
Thursday will pass without major precipitation. On the night to Friday a wide precipitation zone will reach Latvia from the north, bringing wet snow and rain to most of the country’s territory, meteorologists predict. On Friday, with cyclone increasing, colder masses of air will flow from the north, causing weather to become colder in Latvia. Weather will remain windy on the weekend. Precipitation will gradually calm down and some eastern areas will experience frosty weather again at night.
