Weather forecast in Latvia: snow at the start of the week, local glaze ice and frost down to –20°C

Monday will be mostly cloudy. Snow is expected overnight mainly in central regions, and during the day in many parts of Latvia, with the snow cover increasing by 2–4 cm in places. A light to moderate easterly to southeasterly wind will blow, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Minimum air temperatures at night will range from –10 to –15°C in western and central regions, while in eastern Latvia temperatures will drop to –15 to –20°C. During the day, maximum air temperatures will reach –8 to –13°C, while along the Kurzeme coast it will be slightly milder at –5 to –8°C.

On Tuesday, snowfall is expected across most of Latvia, with snow cover increasing by 1–4 cm, and in some southern areas by as much as 5–8 cm. Glaze ice may also form in parts of southern Latvia, so road users are urged to exercise particular caution, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre warns.

A light to moderate easterly to northeasterly wind will prevail, becoming gusty along the Gulf of Riga coast in Kurzeme.

Night-time minimum temperatures will be –8 to –13°C, while in northern Vidzeme temperatures may drop to –14 to –18°C. Along the Kurzeme coast it will again be slightly warmer, at –5 to –8°C. Daytime maximum temperatures will range from –7 to –11°C, remaining a few degrees higher along the coast.

On Wednesday, cloudy conditions will persist and snowfall is expected in many areas. A light to moderate northerly to northeasterly wind will blow, with gusts continuing along the Gulf of Riga coast in Kurzeme. Minimum night-time and maximum daytime temperatures will range from –5 to –10°C, while colder conditions are expected in Vidzeme, where temperatures will be –9 to –12°C.

In the second half of the week, precipitation will ease, and a light to moderate easterly wind will continue. Although forecasts remain changeable, winter-like conditions will persist, with below-freezing temperatures throughout. On some nights, especially in eastern regions, temperatures may again fall to around –20°C.
