Latvia’s Public Utilities Commission (SPRK) concluded that the quality of voice transmission services in Latvia remains high, the average connection time is mostly quick, and the number of failed connections is slowly going down.
With VoLTE network technologies, on the other hand, voice communication in mobile networks is of excellent quality.
SPRK domestic voice communication service quality trends in 2022 were analysed using Tet, BITE Latvija, LMT and Tele2 networks. Electronic communications businesses are required to submit information about their service to SPRK.
To monitor quality at an appropriate level, SPRK performs service quality measurements for businesses whose number of clients exceeds 20 000. Measurement results reflect the quality of communication within average values, such as connection time, voice quality and number of failed connection attempts.
«The general conclusion is that the operators’ own declared quality levels meet the average SPRK’s domestic voice communication service quality level. Operators continue providing high voice communication service quality. At the same time, considering the continued development of network technologies of mobile operators, development of VoLTE communication technologies continues in Latvia, which contributes a great deal to the improvement of voice communication services in mobile networks when compared with 2G or 3G technologies,» says SPRK Electronic Communications and Postal Department Director Ivars Tauniņš.
VoLTE (voice over long-term evolution) is a voice communication technology that was introduced in Latvia by LMT in 2020, by Bite Latvija in 2022 and by Tele2 in 2023. It provides excellent voice communication quality, quick connection time, as well as the option to use 4G or 5G generation internet access service. The technology works if users on both ends use devices compatible with this technology and as long as it is activated in settings.
VoLTE technology helps make the average connection time twice as short in locations in which Bite Latvija, and LMT offer voice communication services.
