US President Donald Trump has withdrawn the country from dozens of major international organizations, including many that work on climate issues, BBC reports.
Almost half of the 66 organizations the US has left are UN organizations, including the UN Climate Change Convention. This is an agreement that covers all international efforts to combat global warming.
The White House said the decision was made because the organizations no longer “serve American interests” and spread “ineffective or hostile narratives.” Trump has previously cut funding to several organizations he dislikes, and has called the widely accepted scientific view that human-caused global warming is a hoax.
The memorandum of withdrawal was signed on the 7th of January, after the White House said it had carefully reviewed its membership in organizations that it said were “wastes of taxpayer dollars.” The official statement said the withdrawal would end funding and involvement in organizations that put the globalist narrative ahead of US priorities.
white house alleges that Many of the organizations support radical climate policies,
global governance, and ideological agendas that are at odds with US sovereignty and economic power.
The list of organizations being abandoned also includes the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which assesses climate science. Other UN organizations from which the US has withdrawn are related to peacekeeping, democracy building, family planning, maternal and child health, and sexual violence in armed conflict.
The US Constitution allows the president to join treaties if two-thirds of the senators agree, but it does not say what happens if the president decides to withdraw from them. This means that Trump’s actions could have legal consequences.
Rachel Cleetus, senior policy director at the non-profit Union of Concerned Scientists, said the US administration is determined to sacrifice human well-being and disrupt international cooperation.
In 2025, Trump decided to withdraw the US from the Paris Climate Agreement.
