Unemployment in Latvia higher than in most of Europe

In March, Latvia’s unemployment rate stood at 6.7%, exceeding the averages for both the European Union (EU) and the euro area, according to the latest data from the EU’s statistical office, Eurostat.

Among EU member states, only Spain (10.9%), Finland (9.1%), Greece (9.0%), Sweden (8.8%), Estonia (8.7%), and France (7.3%) recorded higher unemployment rates than Latvia in March. Lithuania’s unemployment rate during the same period was 6.4%.

The lowest unemployment rates in March were registered in the Czech Republic (2.6%), Poland (2.7%), Malta (2.8%), Slovenia (3.2%), Germany (3.5%), and Bulgaria (3.8%).

On average, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the EU remained at 5.8% in March, while in the euro area it held steady at 6.2%.

According to Eurostat, a total of 12.904 million people were unemployed across the EU in March, of whom 10.818 million were in the euro area.
