In January, Latvia’s unemployment rate stood at 6.9%, surpassing the average levels in both the European Union (EU) and the Eurozone, according to data released on Tuesday, the 4th of March, by the EU statistical office Eurostat.
According to these figures, the highest unemployment rates among EU member states in January were recorded in Spain (10.4%), Sweden (8.9%), Greece and Finland (both 8.7%), Estonia (7.6%), and France (7.3%). In Lithuania, the unemployment rate in the first month of this year was 6.6%.
Meanwhile, the lowest unemployment rates in January were registered in the Czech Republic and Poland (both 2.6%), Malta (3%), Slovenia (3.3%), Germany (3.5%), and the Netherlands (3.8%).
On average, unemployment in the EU remained at 5.8% in January, according to seasonally adjusted data, while in the Eurozone, it stayed at 6.2%.
Eurostat data also show that in January, a total of 12.824 million people were unemployed across the EU, of whom 10.655 million were in Eurozone countries.
