US media reported on Thursday, the 14th of September, that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to meet with US President Joe Biden during his upcoming visit to the US, and that the two leaders will attend the UN General Assembly in New York the same week, reported BBC.
During his visit, President Zelensky is expected to try to persuade Capitol Hill to increase US assistance in the fight against the Russian invasion. To date, the US has provided significant support to the Ukrainian military. Last week, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced a new aid package of over one billion US dollars.
While at UN headquarters in New York, where he will address the General Assembly, Zelensky
also plans to meet other world leaders.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed his intention to meet with Mr Zelensky during the UN meetings.
Analysts say the visit comes at a time when there has been no significant change on the battlefield in Ukraine, which is said to have increased pressure on Ukraine to justify its aid demands, and some US Republicans, including presidential candidates in 2024, are increasingly opposed to providing further aid to Ukraine.
Biden and Zelensky previously spoke in person at the NATO summit in Lithuania in July and the G7 summit in Japan in May. This will be Zelensky’s second visit to the US during his presidency.
