Olena Zelenska, the wife of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, will meet with Latvia’s top officials on Wednesday, the 31st of January. The next day she will participate in the international conference “Russia’s war on children” in Riga.
As confirmed by Latvian president’s advisor Mārtiņš Drēģeris, President Edgars Rinkēvičs will meet with Olena Zelenska at Riga Castle on Wednesday, the 31st of January. During the meeting the two sides will discuss support for Ukraine and its residents, the human rights situation in Ukraine and the return of Ukrainian children illegally deported from the country by Russia.
After meeting with Rinkēvičs, Zelenska will meet with Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa in the Cabinet of Ministers at 14:50. As reported by State Chancellery’s representative Santa Jirgensone, this meeting will address humanitarian and other kinds of Latvia’s support for the Ukrainian people and the situation with Russia’s war crimes against Ukrainian residents, including women and children.
On Thursday, the 1st of February, Rinkēvičs and Zelenska will participate in the conference “Russia’s war on children”. Participants of this conference will discuss bringing Russia to justice for illegal deportations of children from occupied territories in Ukraine, as well as the ways the facilitate the return of those children.
Organisers say that information from the Ukrainian National Information Bureau, nearly 20 000 children have been deported or forcefully moved to Russia or Belarus. Ukraine has been able to return 387 or less than 0.2% of those children so far.
The conference is organised by the Ukrainian Embassy in Latvia, Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “Bring Kids back UA” project and the Children’s Hospital fund together with other supporters.
Olena Zelenska will also meet with representatives of NGOs that provide support to Ukraine, representatives of Ukrainian diaspora and Ukrainian refugees in Latvia.
