Tyre tread depth fails to reach 1 mm. Latvian police stop and fine motorists

On Thursday, the 18th of January, Latvian State Police Road Traffic Safety Department officers, together with colleagues from the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD), performed an inspection of cars in Riga, Krasta Street.
Inspectors focused especially on the state of tyres and their compliance with road traffic safety rules. A total of 244 cars were inspected. More than a dozen violations were uncovered. The smallest depth of tyre protectors during this inspection was 0.80 mm.
For example, registration number plates were removed from three cars for inadequate tire tread. Technical inspection certificates were revoked for eight cars. Drivers of 32 cars were warned to ensure the tyre tread depth needs to meet the minimal requirement (4 – 5 mm), State Police report.

A total of 11 administrative violation procedures were commenced for driving a vehicle without appropriate tyres. Three administrative violation procedures for violations of other road traffic rules were commenced as well.

In order for drivers not to endanger their own safety or the safety of others, when continuing to participate in traffic with tires that do not comply with winter weather conditions, law enforcement officers, together with the CSDD, will continue to pay increased attention to the depth of the tread of vehicle tyres and their compliance with the regulations, promises the police.
The minimal winter tyre tread depth for cars is 4 mm in Latvia. A warning or a fine of three to eleven penalty units (15 to 55 euros), shall be imposed on the driver for the use of a vehicle in road traffic that has insufficient tread depth or has a tyre damage that endangers road safety.
