Trump: We may have to choose between Greenland and NATO

US President Donald Trump has indicated that he may have to choose between American ambitions to acquire Greenland and preserving NATO unity, writes Politico.
In a two-hour interview with The New York Times, Trump was asked whether acquiring Greenland is more important to him than preserving the 76-year-old military alliance. This is a question that has become relevant again for US allies in Europe in recent days after Trump and his administration have repeatedly emphasized the need to annex the autonomous Danish territory to the United States.
The US president did not give a direct answer to the journalist’s question, but acknowledged that his administration may have to choose between Greenland and NATO. When asked why Greenland is so important to Americans, he said that, in his opinion, it is more necessary to psychologically push for success. “I think that ownership gives you a thing that you can’t do with, you’re talking about a lease or a treaty. Ownership gives you things and elements that you can’t get from just signing a document,” Trump emphasized.

Trump also told The New York Times that he doesn’t feel the responsibility for international law

and is limited only by his own conscience, his morals and his mind. “I don’t need international law,” the president added.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned on the 5th of January that a US attack on Greenland would mean the end of both NATO and the security that has been built since the end of World War II. French President Emmanuel Macron, in turn, said on January 8 that Washington was gradually turning away from some of its allies and getting rid of international law, the observance of which it had previously promoted.
The US president has long been skeptical of NATO, and this week he raised concerns about the alliance’s commitment. He expressed doubts on his social network Truth Social whether NATO would come to the aid of Americans if it were really necessary. At the same time, he added that the US will continue to support its alliance allies.
