Threats to civil servants: VDD continues monitoring the internet

Last year, Latvian State Security Service (VDD) performed consultations with residents who threatened protected Latvian civil servants, according to the report from VDD.

The duties of VDD include the protection of top state officials. In 2024, for example, VDD provided constant security for the Saeima speaker and Prime Minister. The service also provided security services during visits of high-ranking foreign officials to Latvia.

Security for the State President is provided by Latvian Military Police.

In order to identify risks to the safety of civil servants under protection by the service, in 2024 VDD continued to evaluate statements directed against officials in the internet environment. Having identified a threat to commit violence, the service conducted a study of the situation in order to identify and eliminate the possibility of a real threat. In some cases, VDD conducted interviews with people who made threats, warning of criminal liability in the event of the implementation of the threat.
