Threats against officials: Latvia’s State Security Service has warned several individuals

Latvia’s State Security Service (VDD) held discussions with approximately 30 residents last year regarding threats made against protected public officials, according to the service’s annual activity report.

In order to identify risks to the security of officials under its protection, the VDD in 2025 continued to assess statements directed against these officials in the online environment.

Upon identifying threats or calls to use violence against officials, the service implemented measures to determine and prevent the possibility of a real threat. In some cases, discussions were conducted with those who had issued threats or incited violence, warning them about the criminal liability for committing violent offenses.

Overall,

in 2025 preventive discussions were carried out with around 30 individuals,

in some cases with the support of the State Police.

Last year, the VDD continued to provide constant security for the Speaker of the Saeima and the Prime Minister. At the same time, the service ensured the safe stay in Latvia of foreign parliamentary and government leaders, as well as foreign ministers and leaders of international organizations.
