The transition from summer time to winter time in Latvia will take place at 04:00 a.m. on 31 October (night from Saturday to Sunday). Clocks will need to be turned one hour back, Latvia’s Economy Ministry reminds.
Because there is no unity on the switch to summer/winter time among EU member states, the practice remains active in Latvia: summer time lasts from the last Sunday of March until the last Sunday of October. The transition to summer time again will happen on 27 March 2022.
The transition to and from summer time in Latvia is governed by 26 October 2010 Cabinet of Ministers rules Nr.1010 On Transition to Summer Time. These rules states that in Latvia transition to summer time is organized the following way: at 03:00 a.m. on the last Sunday of March clocks are turned one hour forward and at 04:00 a.m. on the last Sunday of October clocks are turned one hour back.
The transition to summer time in the European Union is governed by Directive 2000/84/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 January 2001 on summer-time arrangements. This directive dictates the beginning of summer time and its end equally for all EU member states.
In Latvia summer time was introduced for the first time in 1981.
As it is known, in 2018 Europe commenced talks on the possibility of reviewing the established order with the switch between summer and winter time. European Commission organized a survey among EU member states’ residents, in which the majority of interviewed people said the established order should be abolished.
