Sweden promised Latvia to station 600 troops in this country after joining NATO, as Latvijas Radio was told by Latvian Transatlantic Organisation’s (LATO) secretary general Sigita Strūberga.
She explained that Sweden’s ascension to NATO has regional importance. “We can expect NATO will gain additional depth in the context of the Baltic Sea,” said Strūberga, adding that Sweden’s location is important, as well as its forces in the Baltic Sea.
Strūberga also stressed the importance of Swedish air forces, which are large and important to Latvia. Sweden also has multiple submarines, and their numbers will go up. There is also the importance of Sweden’s technological capabilities, explained the LATO secretary general.
Sweden also promised Latvia to station 600 of its troops in this Baltic country after joining NATO. When asked if Sweden’s ascension to NATO could escalate the situation, Strūberga said it’s not Sweden joining NATO that escalates the situation – Russia escalated it on its own.
As it is known, on Monday the Hungarian parliament will vote on Sweden’s ascension to NATO, as confirmed by a high-ranking official of Fidesz political party.
For a country to join NATO it needs to receive approval from all member states. More than one and a half year later Hungary is the only one of the 31 NATO member states that still hasn’t ratified Sweden’s ascension to the alliance.
