Sweden officially becomes 32nd NATO member state

On Thursday, the 7th of March, Sweden became the 32nd NATO member state, as confirmed by the US Department of State.
The official announcement mentions that the conditions for entry into force set forth in Article II of the Protocol to the North Atlantic Treaty on the Accession of the Kingdom of Sweden were fulfilled.
Sweden’s accession to the alliance means that all other member states, US included, are committed to defending it in the event of an attack.
Sweden and Finland both applied to accession to NATO in Mary 2022, finally dropping their long-standing neutrality policy.
This decision was made in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Finland became a member of NATO in April 2023, but Sweden’s accession to NATO was slowed by Turkey and Hungary.
