Latvia’s President Egils Levits has the lowest rating in the history of the country’s presidents, according to data from the survey “What’s happening in Latvia?” done by SKDS public opinion study firm.
SKDS performs evaluation of ratings of the country’s presidents since 1996. Survey results indicate
only 27% of Latvia’s population view the work done by Levits in a positive light. 64% of respondents are negative towards him.
Results of the survey also indicate the voters who support the National Alliance and New Unity make up the majority of the people who are positive about Levits as a president.
Previously it was reported that the National Alliance decided to pick Egils Levits for re-election.
So far only two people have announced plans to run for presidency: Egils Levits and millionaire and founder of the Combined List political party Uldis Pīlēns.
Neither has confident majority support in the Saeima, however.
Presidential elections in Latvia will take place on the last day of May.
Levits graduated from University of Hamburg with a degree in law, social sciences and philosophy.
Levits previously served as Latvia’s ambassador to Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary. He was also in the 5th Saeima and the country’s Minister of Justice.
Levits was later elected judge of the European Court of Human Rights from Latvia. After that he became a judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Levits is the co-author of the Declaration of Restoration of Independence of the 4th of May 1990. He also worked on the creation of the preamble to the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia.
He was elected Latvia’s president in 2019.
