Supporting children is a duty! Latvian ministers says residents should not be tolerant toward maintenance dodgers

Latvian Minister of Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere invites Latvian residents to not be tolerant towards maintenance dodgers.
In her interview to TV3 programme 900 seconds, she mentioned the situation with recovery of maintenance funds has improved somewhat. However, it is necessary to continue work to make sure maintenance dodgers cannot remain in the “grey area”.
She stressed she plans to work with the State Revenue Service (VID) and determine employers that allow their employees to not pay their children maintenance using various methods, such as officially paying them only a minimal wage.

“They have a duty to support their children,” said the minister.

The minister stressed that, Latvia as a society cannot tolerate the fact that there are people who do not pay maintenance. “We won’t be tolerant,” she said, adding that people everywhere know maintenance dodgers have far more money than they earn officially.
As previously reported, in 2023 court bailiffs recovered EUR 11.54 million for the Maintenance Guarantee Fund.
When compared to previous years, the number of cases submitted for enforcement and the volume of enforced funds went down last year. In total, court bailiffs recovered a total of EUR 275.95 million in the interests of the state and sides affected by maintenance dodgers.
