Sunshine, heat records, and a hint of thunder – Easter holidays to bring a taste of summer

Although Maundy Thursday will begin mostly cloudy, the clouds will clear during the day, and the sun will shine. Overall, the day will remain dry, with only occasional short rain showers in the eastern part of the country early in the morning, possibly accompanied by local thunderstorms, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

With light winds blowing, morning fog will reduce visibility in some regions. The air temperature will rise to between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius, though it will be a few degrees cooler in the northern part of the country, where temperatures will reach 13 to 18 degrees, and even cooler around Kolka. It is very likely that the national heat record for the 17th of April set in 1999 when temperatures reached 25.1 degrees in Skulte, might be broken today.

While no precipitation is expected on Good Friday, on Holy Saturday, clouds will bring rain in some places, including heavy downpours in parts of Kurzeme and Vidzeme, possibly with a few thunderstorms.

On Easter Sunday, some rainfall is also expected in certain areas. Winds will remain light. The weather will become even warmer, especially on Friday, when temperatures will reach 24 to 28 degrees in many areas.

National heat records for specific dates are also likely to be broken on both Friday and Saturday. The 18th of April record dates back to 1959, when temperatures in Skrīveri rose to 23.2 degrees. The 19th of April national record is 24.2 degrees, recorded in Liepāja in 2000. Nighttime temperatures will range between 8 and 12 degrees, and Saturday daytime temperatures will reach 21 to 25 degrees, slightly cooler along the coast. On Sunday,Holy S temperatures are expected to stay below 20 degrees.

Next week, skies will be mostly cloudy with occasional rain. Temperatures will gradually drop – starting Tuesday, daytime highs will not exceed 13 to 17 degrees, slightly cooler in the north and coastal areas, while nighttime temperatures will fall to between 2 and 8 degrees.
