Strong wing, rain and freezing rain expected in Latvia this week

The new week will start off in Latvia with warmer weather. Nevertheless, precipitation is expected in the form of wet snow, which will transition into rain as the air temperature increases, as reported by Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

On Monday, the 25th of November, there will be freezing rain in eastern parts of Latvia. Ice will form on roads, making conditions difficult for land and air transports. Pedestrians and motorists are advised to be cautious. Wind speed will go up as well. Weather conditions will start improving in the second half of the week.

In the beginning of the week, weather conditions in Latvia will be dictated by an active cyclone. As usual, the cyclone will bring about precipitation. On Monday night, for instance, a warm atmospheric front will pass through Latvia from the west – rain and wet snow are expected. Warmer masses of air will flow to the country, causing wet snow to transition into rain (freezing rain in eastern parts of the country).

On Tuesday, the 26th of November, another precipitation zone will pass through the country, bringing rain with it. Roads will remain slippery in some areas.

Wind speed will go up as well. The wind will blow from the south and south-east, reaching a speed of 15-16 m/sec along the coast and in Vidzeme. On Tuesday the wind will blow from the south and south-west. Wind speed will remain strong at night and morning hours. On the night to Tuesday, air temperature will reach only -1° C… +6° C. Air temperature will drop below 0° C only in south-eastern parts of the country.

Daytime air temperature will not exceed +2° C… +9° C on Monday and Tuesday. This means the snow on the ground will melt.

In the middle of the week, cyclone activity will gradually go down. Although it will rain in parts of the country every day, precipitation intensity will go down. Wind speed will calm down and will blow from the south. At night and during the day, air temperature will not drop below 0° C.

Precipitation will calm down at the end of the week. The sky will become clear more often. Wind speed will remain. At night, as the sky becomes clear, air temperature will drop to 0° C… -2° C.
